BGCL Offers Extended Hours for Ages 13-18 Through Summer Nights Initiative

July 26, 2017

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is one of several youth-based organizations which is offering extended operating hours through the state’s Summer Nights Initiative.

Youths 13 to 18 years old are invited to the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., through August 17 for basketball games and competitions, dance instruction, fitness training, pool and ping-pong, and other recreational activities. Membership is not required.

Markus Fischer, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, said the Summer Nights Initiative is in line with the organization’s core program area of promoting healthy living. “We’re pleased to be a partner in providing additional opportunities to keep kids safe, active, and having fun this summer,” he said.

The administration of Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito established the Summer Nights Initiative in 2015, benefitting youth in Boston, Chicopee, Everett, Fall River, Holyoke, Lawrence, Malden, Springfield, and Worcester during summer evenings. The extended hours of operations complement other programs currently offered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for families at hundreds of state parks, forests, reservations, beaches, and other facilities across the state.

“The Baker-Polito Administration continues to prioritize a high level of access within the state parks system for people of all abilities, ages, and locations to enjoy and benefit from,” said DCR Commissioner Leo Roy. “The Administration works closely with several partners to provide excellent and unique programming for the Summer Nights Initiative, and I thank them for their continued dedication and support.”

“I’m always happy to see the state working together with local organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. Ensuring that youth are involved in positive summer activities is very important to me, and I am especially excited for these wonderful programs that our youth in the City of Lawrence can participate in,” said State Representative Frank A. Moran (D-Lawrence).
