September 15 to October 15 marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCL) couldn’t be more proud to celebrate the city’s Latino culture. With 91% of our members as Hispanic or Latino, predominately from the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, the recognition of Hispanic Americans’ achievements and contributions is personal
During the Semana Hispana festival in Lawrence, MA, BGCL’s dance team participated in the parade and performed at the Campagnone Common with more than 1,000 people present!
We continued the festivities back at the Club. Germinudy Rosario, president of the Semana Hispana committee, and Taller Borinqueno de Lawrence, an organization that keeps Lawrence’s Puerto Rican culture alive, attended over Zoom to discuss the importance and history of Semana Hispana.
Our dance team then performed five dances for Club members, including bachata, salsa and bomba. Members from the audience were even taught the dance steps.
To wrap up the day, children enjoyed a Hispanic feast featuring mofongo, tostones, carne frita and longaniza.
The Lawrence Housing Authority credits the programs of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence for significantly reducing juvenile deliquency in public housing.
