Fundraiser on March 29 to Benefit Lawrence Police Detective Running Boston Marathon for BGCL

March 11, 2019

Lawrence Police Detective Dean Murphy is preparing to run his 16th Boston Marathon overall and fourth benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, which provides academic enrichment, healthy lifestyle and leadership development programs to more than 4,000 youth members.

Community members may demonstrate their support by attending a fundraiser on Friday, March 29 beginning at 6 p.m. at Relief's In located at 1 Market St. in Lawrence. Tickets at the door cost $20 for the event featuring music, refreshments, a 50/50 raffle and raffle prizes such as sports memorabilia, gift baskets and gift certificates.

Murphy, an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, is fundraising to give back for the life lessons he learned through participating in the basketball team and after-school reading program. As a second generation police detective and father of two boys, he feels strongly about supporting the youth of the city.

"All one needs to do is walk inside the club on any given day to witness the amazing atmosphere. What the staff and volunteers accomplish is part of what motivates me, especially on these cold and snowy training runs," Murphy said. "But it all comes down to this: helping the club is the right thing to do. And I will do it as long as I can."

The total fundraising goal of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence Boston Marathon team, which also includes Haverhill native Renee Robertson, is $27,000. The two guaranteed entries were awarded as part of John Hancock's Non-Profit Marathon Program.
