IBEW Local 103 Donates $6,500 to BGCL

October 23, 2017

Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera, an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, returned to his "second home" to help accept a $6,500 donation to the club from IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Local 103. The union of electrical workers raised the funds by selling tickets for raffle items handcrafted and donated by its members' families.

"It's important to us to give back to the communities in which we work. The generosity of the men and women in our union is extraordinary," said IBEW Local 103 business agent David O'Laughlin, noting that the group has raised $35,000 through past fundraisers benefiting local charities.

According to O'Laughlin, the union selected the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence because of his wife Maria's positive experiences as a club kid while growing up in Lawrence and Methuen.

"She has said many times over the years how much fun she had, and how the club saved her from potentially doing the wrong thing," O'Laughlin said. "You can see in the kids' eyes that they know they're safe there, which is so heartwarming. It's a big deal for us to give back to such a worthy cause."
