Inaugural Fundraiser Benefiting Stephen and Maureen Kelley Scholarship Awards

November 25, 2016

When deciding where to open DLC Law Group in 2000, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCL) alumnus Socrates de la Cruz, Esq. came home to Lawrence hoping that his example would inspire "someone growing up the way I did to no longer see a law degree as out of reach."

Now the Methuen resident is hosting an inaugural fundraiser to ensure that other club kids have the financial means to pursue their academic and professional dreams.

The Socratic, Inc. Make a Difference Night will take place on Friday, Dec. 2, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at Sal's Function Hall, 354 Merrimack St. in Lawrence. The event, which includes food, a silent auction, and a cash bar, benefits the Stephen and Maureen Kelley Scholarship Awards in honor of the siblings and longtime BGCL employees.

Prior to joining the club, de la Cruz recalls being left alone often in the housing projects while his single mother worked multiple jobs to provide for her two sons. He credits the caring staff and volunteers at the club for "helping me feel sheltered, wanted, and protected, like I was part of a bigger family that was genuinely looking out for me."

De la Cruz graduated from Kimball Union Academy, the College of the Holy Cross, and Suffolk University before working at the Essex District Attorney's Office. Now married with three daughters, he said he has integrated life lessons learned at BGCL into his family life as well as his career. They include working hard even when no one is watching, and living by Kelley's mantra that "If plan A doesn't work, there area 25 other different letters in the alphabet."

"I am proud to be one of thousands like me who have been directly affected by the tireless work of Steve and Maureen Kelley at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence," said de la Cruz, who still refers to Associate Director Steve Kelley as his surrogate father. "Socratic, Inc. embodies the spirit of the Kelleys and is my way of honoring them while continuing to help the youth in Lawrence."

Tickets to the Socratic, Inc. Make a Difference Night are available at the door for $25. For more information, visit www.socraticinc.com.
