On Bert Hammel’s passing

October 09, 2018

The staff and kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence share in the overwhelming grief over the passing of Bert Hammel.

Bert was a legendary and beloved figure at the club. For more than 35 years, he was the driving force of our Academic Basketball Awareness Camp in which hundreds of boys and girls learned the fundamentals of the sport, but more crucially the importance of leadership, teamwork and a myriad of other life skills that continue to serve them well to this day.

If any child needed sneakers for camp, Bert made sure they were quietly provided. He also refused any form of public acknowledgement while sponsoring dozens of families at Christmas, as well as the annual holiday party for the club's basketball players.

Bert's enduring legacy of passion, dedication and hard work lives on in generations of children who have been proud to call him their coach, mentor and one of the most important influences they could hope to have in their lives.

For Bert, and for all of us at the club, it was never about basketball. It remains about family - and love.
