Lawrence Boys and Girls Club

Health & Life Skills

A variety of health and life skills workshops provide young members with the knowledge, skills, self-esteem, and peer support to postpone sexual activity and avoid using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence has implemented the following initiatives to help our members achieve and maintain healthy, active lifestyles:

Baby Think It Over

This national award-winning program teaches girls and boys about the consequences of teenage pregnancy on their lives and their futures. The program’s primary goal is to discourage premature sexual activity of our members through education. Participants are given computerized dolls that simulate real life baby behavior (like loud crying at 3:00 a.m.). Dolls must be cared for like a real baby or they’ll cry constantly. Participants realize the effort required to raise a baby and learn a valuable lesson.

Project Advance

This comprehensive program teaches teen members about the pitfalls of teen pregnancy and peer pressure by increasing self-esteem and decision-making skills.

Alumni & Speakers

Alumni and guest speakers constantly speak to members about topics ranging from the importance of education to leadership and “growing up in Lawrence.” Alumni speakers make a big impression on the kids, since they also were Boys & Girls Club kids growing up.

The New Balance Healthy Living Club

The New Balance Healthy Living Club is a comprehensive fitness and nutrition program that encourages girls between the ages of 9 and 18 to develop healthy lifestyles that will continue into adulthood, including regular exercise, good eating habits, and an understanding of the correlation between these behaviors and good health.

Street SMART

The Street SMART violence prevention program counteracts the negative lures of gangs, violence, and “street” influences on adolescents ages 11-13. While building awareness and resistance skills, participants develop the confidence and knowledge to make intelligent choices. Participants reinforce what they have learned and share it with others by organizing an annual Global Awareness Day that promotes the program’s positive messages.

The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) prevention/education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. The program features engaging, interactive, small-group activities that increase participants’ peer support, enhance their life skills, build their resiliency, and strengthen leadership skills.
