Programs in the arts enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and an appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts, and creative writing.
Volunteers from several local schools including Merrimack College, Andover High School, Phillips Academy, and Brooks School lead various arts & crafts projects for 200 children every week. These projects are lots of fun and usually include some writing skills and lots of creativity.
The Club works with outside performing artists to provide instrumental and voice instruction on an ad hoc basis. Since music programs have been eliminated from Lawrence public schools, and our youth members are not able to afford private instruction, we are especially grateful to these contributors for their assistance.
Our dance studio is complete with a flexible floor, surround-sound stereo system, plasma TV for instructional videos, mirrored wall, and an instructor that attracts kids like a magnet for lessons in salsa, tango, meringue, jazz, and ballet. Our youth members give performances, as well as participate in community events such as the Puerto Rican Festival, Spanish Week, and local church programs.
Talent is abundant at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. Talent shows provide a forum for members to express themselves and have lots of fun. These shows are held twice a year and kids practice for months to get ready. The shows include a DJ, judges, awards, and lots of talented kids.
