At 18 years old, Javier Lopez has already built an impressive record of achievement. A recent graduate of Central Catholic High School, Javier was a standout basketball player and team captain who became the school’s all-time leading scorer, surpassed 1,500 career points, and helped lead one of the top teams in the state. This fall, he will continue his education at Brandeis University, where he is considering studying computer science or sports psychology.
But Javier’s story is about much more than what he accomplished on the basketball court.
Long before the records, awards, and college plans, Javier was a fifth grader walking into the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence because he wanted to spend time with his friends and play basketball year-round. Over the next several years, the Club became an important part of his life, shaping not only the athlete he became, but also the student, leader, brother, friend, and young man he is today.
During his time at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, Javier grew from a young member and student athlete in the academic basketball program into an active Keystone participant and a role model for younger members. Along the way, he built relationships with coaches and staff members who challenged him, supported him through difficult moments, and taught him that the lessons learned through basketball could extend far beyond the game.
Now a Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence alumnus, Javier carries those lessons with him as he prepares for what comes next.
Growing Beyond the Game
As Javier moved into seventh and eighth grade, his relationship with the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence began to change. Basketball was still what he loved, but the lessons surrounding the game were becoming just as important as the game itself.
Stevie Martinez, who coached Javier during eighth grade, was one of the people who had a particularly strong influence on him. Javier remembers Stevie emphasizing responsibility, maturity, and how to carry himself, lessons that extended well beyond basketball.
“He understood me as a person more so than just as a player,” Javier said.
Through the Club’s academic basketball program, Javier was expected to take his schoolwork seriously, remain accountable, and develop discipline that could serve him in every area of life. He began to understand that basketball could teach him how to work, respond to pressure, stay grounded, and keep moving when things did not go his way.
Those lessons followed him to Central Catholic.
Learning Through Adversity
Javier’s high school career included tremendous success, but some of the experiences that shaped him most came when the outcome was not what he wanted.
During his sophomore year, Central Catholic was competing in a Sweet 16 playoff game when Javier found himself at the free-throw line with an opportunity to help send the game into overtime. He missed both shots, and the game ended in a loss.
What Javier remembers most, however, is the way people from the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence responded afterward. Staff members reached out to check on him and make sure he was okay. Their first concern was not analyzing the game or discussing what he could have done differently; they wanted to know how Javier was doing.
That moment reinforced something he had already come to understand: the people around him cared about who he was beyond basketball.
Rather than allowing the disappointment to define him, Javier used it as motivation. The following summer, he dedicated himself to his training, often starting his day with a 5:30 a.m. workout and finding time to return for another workout later in the day.
That consistency eventually helped propel Javier toward one of the most accomplished basketball careers in Central Catholic history.
From the Club Courts to the Record Books
During his senior year, Javier became Central Catholic’s all-time leading scorer and joined the school’s exclusive 1,500-point club. He also reached the 1,000-point milestone in just three varsity seasons.
Yet Javier’s success was never only about scoring.
He also took pride in being someone his teammates could rely on, both as a captain and as a leader. The same lessons he first encountered at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence — discipline, humility, accountability, and consistency — became central to the way he approached high school basketball.
His family also helped keep him grounded throughout that journey, reminding him to appreciate each accomplishment without losing sight of the work and support that made it possible.
For Javier, the records are meaningful, but they are not the only thing he wants to leave behind. He wants to be remembered as someone who worked hard, supported his teammates, remained grounded, and carried himself the right way.
Learning What It Means to Lead
As Javier grew older, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence also gave him opportunities to grow beyond basketball. Through Keystone, he became involved in community service and began seeing what it meant to contribute to the same community that had supported him for years.
Those experiences pushed him to become more comfortable taking on responsibility and stepping into leadership roles. At Central Catholic, Javier became a student ambassador and a member of the school’s leadership team.
“I think the Club influenced me jumping into that leadership role even when I probably didn’t want to,” Javier said. “But I knew I kind of needed to.”
Community service also deepened Javier’s understanding of giving back. Over time, he began to see how meaningful it could be to show up for others and contribute to the community around him. That lesson connected closely to something his parents had taught him: when people believe in you and invest in you, you should look for ways to do the same for others.
“They help you, and then you’re part of the next generation that helps the younger kids after you,” Javier said. “It’s just a never-ending circle.”
That cycle has become especially meaningful as Javier has grown from one of the younger kids at the Club into someone younger members can look up to. His two younger brothers also attend the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, allowing him to watch another generation of his own family grow within the same community that helped shape him.
Looking Ahead to Brandeis
This fall, Javier will begin the next chapter of his life at Brandeis University, where he is considering studying either computer science or sports psychology.
His interest in computer science connects to his academic experiences and his father’s background in the field, while sports psychology connects closely to Javier’s own experiences as an athlete.
As a student athlete, Javier understands how much of competitive sports takes place mentally. He has experienced the pressure of important games, the disappointment of falling short, and the challenge of staying confident through difficult moments. He also knows how valuable it can be to have people around you who offer guidance and perspective, which has made him interested in the possibility of someday providing that same support to other athletes.
Regardless of which path he chooses, Javier wants his future to include more than personal success. He hopes to help his family, remain connected to Lawrence, and continue supporting younger people who are working toward their own goals.
Carrying the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence With Him
Although Javier has now graduated and become a Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence alumnus, he does not see that as the end of his relationship with the Club.
When asked to reflect on what the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence has ultimately given him, his answer captured how deeply those experiences have shaped the person he is becoming.
“Because of BGCL, I understand life’s values and how it translates to the basketball court, but also how it teaches me how to be a better student, better brother, better athlete, better friend, and eventually a better father, and a better person in my community.”
Javier first came to the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence because he wanted another place to play basketball with his friends. Years later, he leaves his time as a youth member as Central Catholic’s all-time leading scorer, a Brandeis-bound student, an experienced leader, and someone who understands the importance of helping those who come behind him.
Today, Javier continues to volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, giving his time back to the same community that gave so much to him. The basketball records will always be part of his story, but his greatest legacy may be the example he leaves behind: a young man who took every lesson, every challenge, and every opportunity he was given and is now using them to inspire and support the next generation.
