On Saturday, May 10, the gym at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence was transformed into a stage bursting with color, rhythm, and self-expression as our talented members took the spotlight for this year’s annual Dance Recital. From 6:00 to 8:45 PM, parents, staff, and supporters cheered as dancers from grades 3–8 performed 18 exhilarating routines that reflected this year’s powerful theme: “Express Yourself.”
The evening featured an exciting lineup of Latin, hip-hop, and contemporary dance numbers, including high-energy performances like Uptown Funk, Dinero, and All the Stars Mix, as well as cultural tributes like Farolito and La Cosquillita. Each dance was a vibrant display of confidence and growth—skills our members have been honing since September under the dedicated leadership of longtime Dance Coach Kathy Cuevas, who’s been inspiring young performers for 24 years, alongside assistant Luis Fernandez.
Thanks to generous funding, our dancers dazzled in a wide variety of costumes—this year with brand-new outfits for our 7th and 8th graders. The Club ensures every child has what they need to participate fully, creating an inclusive space where talent and passion can shine, no matter the circumstances.
Behind the scenes, BGCL’s very own DJ and stage crew—comprised entirely of Club members—helped bring the recital to life by setting up the music, lighting, and backdrop. Through this hands-on experience, they continue to learn valuable technical and production skills that are as empowering as the performances themselves.
Relive the full recital below and experience the joy, growth, and creativity our young dancers brought to the stage. We’re incredibly proud of their hard work and the confidence they displayed through every step. Stay tuned for next year’s show—you won’t want to miss it!
