On Saturday, April 5th, the Andover Country Club was filled with energy, excitement, and—most importantly—hope. Over 200 supporters came together in celebration and purpose as the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence hosted its most important night of the year: our annual Auction.
And what a night it was.
Thanks to the unwavering generosity of our community, we’re proud to share that we met our goal, raising over $500,000 in critical funds to support the youth who rely on us every single day. These funds are essential to sustaining our $3.9 million annual operating budget, ensuring we can continue providing meaningful, life-changing programs to the youth who need us most.
Silent Auction, Loud Impact
The silent auction was a runaway success, drawing in 1,590 bids and raising more than $60,000 on its own. With items ranging from luxury experiences to local gems, bidders came together to give big and bid bigger—all to support our mission.
Feed the Need
One of the most powerful moments of the evening was our Feed the Need appeal—a heartfelt call to invest in the daily support our kids count on. We ask a lot of our kids—to set goals, then work hard and stay focused to achieve them. Every donation to Feed the Need helps us offer the nourishment and nurture every day that makes it possible for them to succeed.
Our generous supporters responded in a big way. Together, they helped us reach our goal that will allow us to keep providing transformative support and enrichment for our kids—experiences that open doors, build confidence, and pave the way for brighter futures. We are forever grateful.
A Community-Wide Effort
Behind every number is a network of people working together to make it all possible. As Gail McNaughton, BGCL Board Member and Auction Committee Member, shared:
“The auction is more than just one night—it’s a powerful example of what’s possible when a whole community comes together. From generous vendors and dedicated volunteers to longtime supporters and new faces, it’s an all-hands effort to create opportunities for the kids who need us most. That’s why my family and I stay involved—because we have seen how much of a difference it truly makes.”
This night was a reflection of that difference. Every detail—from beautifully curated auction items to seamless check-in, from festive décor to the warm, welcoming energy in the room—was the result of months of preparation by a committed team of staff, volunteers, and committee members who care deeply about the Club’s mission.
Local businesses generously donated their goods and services. Community members stepped up with sponsorships, in-kind support, and meaningful contributions. Volunteers assisted in setting up the event and played a key role during the evening—helping with guest check-in and check-out to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience. Our dedicated staff also lent a helping hand throughout the night, working behind the scenes to keep everything running seamlessly.
And perhaps most importantly, every single person in the room—whether it was their first auction or their tenth—showed up with one goal in mind: to uplift the next generation. Their collective energy turned this event into something far greater than a fundraiser. It became a celebration of what’s possible when compassion, community, and purpose align.
Live Auction Highlights
One of the most exhilarating moments of the evening was our live auction, where bid numbers were raised high and the energy in the room soared. Fueled by the unmatched energy and charm of our auctioneer, Frank Cieri, the live auction had guests eagerly competing for exclusive, high-end experiences—and they delivered.
Among the most sought-after packages was the incredible 8-day, 7-night stay at a beachfront villa in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico—a dream escape that drew major interest. Another favorite was the Ireland Golf Extravaganza for four, featuring two rounds of golf and a two-night getaway amidst stunning scenery and world-class courses. And for golf enthusiasts closer to home, the Pebble Beach Golf Getaway for four offered rounds at the legendary Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay courses, along with a luxurious stay at The Inn at Spanish Bay.
These unforgettable experiences didn’t just make for a thrilling auction—they played a key role in helping us meet our fundraising goal and deepened the impact of the night.
Igniting the Mission
As part of the evening program, Markus took the stage to share the heart of our work, spotlighting the three core program areas that guide everything we do:
Academic Success
We encourage academic achievement and expose our youth to new careers and educational pathways to ensure all members graduate high school ready for college, trade school, military service, or employment.
Healthy Lifestyles
We empower our youth to take care of their bodies and minds through nutrition education, mentorship, physical fitness, and leadership programs—instilling habits that last a lifetime.
Character & Leadership
We nurture future community leaders and responsible citizens through youth empowerment and leadership development.
Stories that Inspire
Max Lopez, a proud Club alumnus, shared his journey—and his story brought the room to its feet. With strength, humility, and heart, Max spoke about how the Club became his lifeline: a second home that gave him stability, support, and the confidence to chase his dreams. His words were a moving reminder of what’s possible when a young person is surrounded by people who believe in them.
Max’s journey is living proof that the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence doesn’t just change lives—it transforms them.
Beyond the Numbers
Ninety-six percent of our members come from low to moderate-income households. Sixty-three percent are raised by a single parent. For many families, even our modest $40 membership fee is a stretch.
But thanks to our donors, attendees, and sponsors, cost is never a barrier. Their support helps us say “yes” to every child who walks through our doors. Each day, up to 500 kids find more than just a building at our Club—they find a second home, caring mentors, academic support, and the opportunity to dream bigger.
This spring, some of our graduating seniors were accepted to Ivy League schools—a powerful testament to their grit, and to the village that stands behind them.
With Gratitude
This incredible night would not have been possible without the dedication of our staff and volunteers, who gave their time and energy to ensure everything ran smoothly.
We want to give a very big and special shoutout to Sarah Hogue for her incredible dedication, tireless work, and steady leadership in managing and bringing this entire event together. Her behind-the-scenes efforts and unwavering commitment to our mission helped make this night not only possible—but truly unforgettable.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to Timra Carlson, our Auction Committee Chair for the incredible passion and commitment she brings to this event year after year.
And of course, a special thank you to Frank Cieri, who once again volunteered his time and energy to serve as our auctioneer. With his signature charisma, heart, and infectious enthusiasm, Frank helped bring the room to life and drove the momentum that made the live auction such a standout moment of the night.
To all who attended, donated, bid, and cheered us on: thank you. Your support creates real opportunities and lasting change.
